WhatsApp Web vs. WhatsApp Desktop: which should you use?

As of 28 July 2026, WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop do almost exactly the same things — including calls, which used to be the one feature only Desktop had. What's actually still different comes down to three things: which operating system you're on, how many computers you use WhatsApp from, and whether you want browser extensions.

Most comparison articles on this topic were written before that changed and still list calling as a desktop-only feature. As of last week, it isn't. If you're reading a "Web vs. Desktop" guide that doesn't mention this, it's out of date.

The update that changes this comparison: WhatsApp Web can now make calls

On 28 July 2026, WhatsApp officially launched calling on WhatsApp Web — both one-on-one and group audio and video calls, with no app install required. It ships with feature parity most people wouldn't expect from a browser: screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab with history and favorites, end-to-end encryption, and no time limits or cost.

Alongside it, WhatsApp launched Call Transfer (move an active group call from your phone to Web or Desktop without hanging up), a Waiting Room for call links, QuickHD video from the start of a call, and noise suppression. The rollout is gradual — WhatsApp's own announcement says it'll reach everyone "soon" rather than all at once, so if you don't see it yet, that's why.

This isn't Voqua's feature and it doesn't do translation — it's plain WhatsApp calling, now available in a browser. What it does mean is that "get Desktop if you need to call people" — the single most repeated line in every older comparison of the two — is no longer true.

What's actually still different

With calling now equal, the remaining differences are narrower than most comparisons suggest, and one of them recently flipped.

Which operating system you're on

WhatsApp's Windows desktop app has had a rocky few years: it shipped as an Electron app (essentially a wrapped browser), briefly moved to a native build around August 2024, and by late 2025 reporting from WABetaInfo and other outlets tracking WhatsApp's builds found Meta had reverted the Windows app back to a web-based one — the Electron-based build is now formally end-of-life. macOS took the opposite path and has a genuinely native app. Practically: "Desktop is faster and lighter than Web" is true on a Mac and no longer reliably true on Windows, where the desktop app and the browser tab are closer to the same technology under the hood.

Browser extensions

This is the one structural difference that hasn't changed and won't. WhatsApp Web runs in a browser, so it can load extensions; Desktop is a standalone app and can't. Every inline chat translator, voice-note transcriber, and privacy-blur tool — including Voqua — only exists on Web for exactly this reason. If any of that matters to you, Web isn't optional.

Multiple or shared computers

Web needs nothing installed — open a browser, scan a QR code, log out when you're done. That still makes it the practical choice on a shared family computer, a work machine that isn't yours, or when you regularly switch between computers. Desktop is a per-machine install, which is fine for one personal computer and mildly annoying for anything else.

Linux

WhatsApp has no official desktop app for Linux. Web is the only first-party option there — this hasn't changed and isn't likely to.

Notifications

A native app can notify you at the OS level even when nothing related is visibly open; a browser tab depends on the browser and OS keeping background tabs and their notifications alive, which is usually fine on a machine you leave on but is the one place a standalone app still has a structural edge, particularly on Windows machines that aggressively suspend background tabs.

What calling still can't do — on Web, Desktop, or your phone

Web calling closed the gap with Desktop, but it didn't close every gap with what people actually want from a business call. Two things are still missing everywhere, not just on Web:

No call recording, on any platform

WhatsApp offers no native way to record a voice or video call — on Web, Desktop, or mobile. This isn't a Web-specific gap that a future update will close; it's a deliberate consequence of end-to-end encryption, which is designed so that not even WhatsApp's own servers can access call content, let alone store it. If you need a record of a call for follow-up, the workaround is external screen/audio recording software, not a WhatsApp setting.

Rollout is still gradual as of this update

As of 1 August 2026, four days after launch, WhatsApp's own announcement still describes Web calling reaching everyone "soon" rather than confirming full availability — some accounts may still not see it yet. If your WhatsApp Web doesn't show a Calls tab, that's the likely reason; there's no setting to force it on early.
