WhatsApp voice notes not playing or no sound: the actual fixes

"Not working" covers five different symptoms with five different causes — no sound at all, wrong speaker, too quiet, stuck loading, or silent specifically on WhatsApp Web. Find your symptom below.

Almost every "voice notes not working" report is one of five distinct problems: no sound at all, sound only through the earpiece, sound that's just too quiet, a note that won't finish loading, or — a growing category — silence specifically on WhatsApp Web while the same note plays fine on the phone. They have different causes and different fixes.

No sound at all

This is almost always a media volume problem, not a WhatsApp problem. Voice notes, like all app audio, play through your phone's media volume stream — a separate control from ringer and notification volume. If you had the phone on silent, or media volume happened to be all the way down, the note plays with zero sound and nothing on screen tells you why. Tap play, then immediately press the physical volume-up button — if this fixes it, that confirms the cause. If media volume is already up, check whether your phone is connected to a Bluetooth speaker, earbuds, or a car system elsewhere in the house; WhatsApp will happily route audio there instead of the phone speaker with no obvious warning.

Plays only through the earpiece (or a screen protector blocks it)

WhatsApp uses your phone's proximity sensor — the same sensor that turns your screen off during a phone call — to detect when you've lifted the phone to your ear mid-playback, and automatically switches audio from loudspeaker to the quiet earpiece. If a thick case or a screen protector covers that sensor (usually near the top of the screen, by the front camera), the phone can misread "on a desk" as "held to an ear," and audio drops to near-silent earpiece volume even when you're not near your face. Try removing the case or protector, or tap the speaker icon that appears on the voice note during playback to force loudspeaker mode.

Voice notes are too quiet to hear properly

WhatsApp does not normalize recording volume across senders. A voice note recorded close to someone's microphone comes through clearly; one recorded with the phone across the room, in a noisy environment, or with a damaged mic comes through faint — and there's no per-message volume boost inside WhatsApp to compensate. If this happens with one specific contact repeatedly, it's how they're recording, not a setting on your end. The only real workarounds are a system-level volume booster app or headphones with their own amplification; asking the sender to hold the phone closer when recording fixes it at the source.

Voice note won't finish loading

A note stuck on a spinning download icon that never completes is usually one of three things: a weak or unstable connection interrupting the download, a partially-corrupted media file (more common on older or heavily-used phone storage), or an outdated app version with a known media bug. Reconnect to solid Wi-Fi and retry; if it still won't load, clear WhatsApp's cache (Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage on Android) without deleting your chats, and make sure you're on the current app version from the Play Store or App Store.

No sound specifically on WhatsApp Web

This is the fastest-growing version of this problem, and worth its own section: whatsapp web voice message no sound gets searched more than any single mobile symptom, which tracks with how much more WhatsApp business happens on desktop now that WhatsApp Web can even handle calls (see our Web vs. Desktop comparison). The causes are different from mobile because WhatsApp Web depends on your browser's audio handling, not the phone app's:

  • The browser tab itself is muted. In Chrome, right-click the WhatsApp Web tab — if there's an "Unmute site" option, that's it. This happens more than people expect, often from an accidental click on the tab's audio icon.
  • Your system's audio output is set to the wrong device. If your computer is connected to headphones, a second monitor with speakers, or a Bluetooth device that's since been turned off, audio can be routing somewhere silent. Check your OS's sound output setting, not just the browser.
  • The browser is blocking autoplay audio for web.whatsapp.com specifically, which some browsers do by default for sites you haven't interacted with yet. Click directly on the play button rather than relying on autoplay, and check your browser's site permissions for web.whatsapp.com if it persists.
  • The tab is stale after a WhatsApp Web update. As with most WhatsApp Web glitches, a hard refresh (or fully closing and reopening the tab) resolves more of these than any setting change.
If you can hear it but not understand it

None of the above helps if the voice note plays perfectly and is simply in a language you don't speak. That's a different problem — see how to translate WhatsApp voice notes, including on WhatsApp Web, where there's no native option for that either.

Quick answers

Why does my WhatsApp voice note have no sound?

Voice notes play through your media volume, not your ringer or notification volume. Play the note and press the volume-up button while it's playing — if the phone was on silent or the media stream was muted, this is almost always the fix. If media volume is already up, check for a connected Bluetooth device playing the audio somewhere else.

Why do WhatsApp voice notes only play through the earpiece?

That's the proximity sensor. WhatsApp switches audio to the earpiece automatically when it thinks the phone is near your face, so it can also turn off the screen mid-playback. A thick case or screen protector covering the sensor near the top of the screen is the usual cause — remove it, or tap the speaker icon that appears during playback to force it to loudspeaker.

Why are WhatsApp voice notes so quiet?

WhatsApp doesn't normalize volume across senders, so a voice note recorded far from someone's phone mic will always sound quieter than one recorded close up, regardless of your own volume settings. There's no per-message volume boost in the app; a system-level volume booster or headphones with amplification are the only workarounds.

Why won't my voice note play on WhatsApp Web?

Check the browser tab isn't muted (right-click the tab and look for a mute toggle in Chrome), that your system's audio output device is the one you expect, and that the browser has permission to autoplay audio on web.whatsapp.com. Unlike the phone app, WhatsApp Web depends on your browser's own audio decoding, so a browser restart or update fixes it more often than anything WhatsApp-side.
