Comparison

The best WhatsApp translator apps in 2026, compared honestly

Seven real ways to translate WhatsApp — on your phone and on WhatsApp Web — with what each one actually does, the languages it covers, whether it handles voice notes, and what it costs. We make one of them, so we've named all the others.

The short answer: on a phone, try WhatsApp's own built-in translator first — it's free and private, but it covers only 6 languages on Android and 21 on iPhone, and does nothing for voice notes. If that's not enough, a dedicated translator app (iPhone) or a browser extension (WhatsApp Web) fills the gap. Which one depends almost entirely on where you use WhatsApp, so that's how this list is organised.

We make Voqua, a WhatsApp Web translator, and it appears in this list. Every competitor is named and linked. Ratings, user counts and prices were read from the App Store, Chrome Web Store and each product's own site on 5 October 2026, are US prices, and will have moved since.

Before you pick: three questions that decide it

  • Phone or computer? WhatsApp's own translator and the iPhone apps are phone-only. WhatsApp Web and the desktop app have no translator at all — here's exactly what WhatsApp's built-in translator covers — so on a computer, an extension is the only route.
  • Which languages? The built-in feature skips most of the languages WhatsApp's biggest markets actually speak: Urdu, Bengali, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai and Malay are all missing on Android. Check your language before anything else.
  • Do voice notes matter? In much of South Asia, the Gulf and Latin America, business happens in voice notes. Text-only translators leave you with a 2-minute audio clip you still can't understand.

On your phone

1. WhatsApp Message Translations (built-in) — best free starting point

WhatsApp added Message Translations to the mobile apps from September 2025. Long-press a message and tap Translate; on Android you can also auto-translate a whole chat. Translation runs on your device after a small language pack downloads, so your messages are never sent anywhere — the most private option on this list, and it costs nothing.

The limits: six languages on Android (English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic), 21 on iPhone, no voice-note translation, and no WhatsApp Web or desktop support at all. If it's showing errors like "language pack not found," see our fix guide.

Choose it if: your languages are on the list and you only use WhatsApp on your phone.

2. Google Translate — Tap to Translate (Android) — free, but copy-based

Not a WhatsApp feature at all: Google Translate's Tap to Translate puts a floating bubble over any Android app. Copy a WhatsApp message, tap the bubble, read the translation. It covers far more languages than WhatsApp's own feature and is free.

The limits: it's one message at a time, it's Android-only, and you're still copying and pasting your replies back. Fine for an occasional message; tiring for a real conversation.

Choose it if: you're on Android and only need the odd message translated.

3. WhatLingo — best dedicated app on iPhone

WhatLingo is a separate iPhone app — not a keyboard or a plugin — that connects to your WhatsApp account and shows your chosen chats fully translated. You reply in your own language and it sends the translated message; your contacts don't need the app. It transcribes and translates incoming voice notes too, and handles group chats where several languages are mixed.

The facts: 35+ languages, iPhone only (iOS 15.1+), rated 4.8 from 167 App Store ratings. A 7-day free trial, then a subscription — $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US store.

Worth knowing: because it reads and sends through your connected account, your messages pass through its service. Read its privacy policy, and use its preview mode if you want to check translations before they're sent.

Choose it if: you're on iPhone and want whole conversations — including group chats — translated in both directions.

4. Global Chat Translator — iPhone alternative with short-term plans

Global Chat Translator works the same way as WhatLingo: connect your existing WhatsApp, and translations appear automatically in both directions, with voice-message translation and the original shown beside the translation.

The facts: 28 languages, iPhone and iPad (and Apple-silicon Macs). Pricing includes a $4.99 weekly plan — handy for a single trip or one short negotiation — alongside $7.99 monthly and $44.99 yearly. It has far fewer App Store ratings than WhatLingo (4.0 from 4 at the time of writing), so there's less evidence either way.

Choose it if: you need a translator for a week, not a year.

On WhatsApp Web (computer)

None of the phone options above help on a computer, and that's where a lot of real work happens — at a desk, with a keyboard, often with a client or supplier abroad. On WhatsApp Web, your options are browser extensions. For the wider extension landscape (privacy, CRM and the bulk-sender category to avoid), see our guide to WhatsApp Web extensions.

5. DeepL browser extension — best for occasional European-language text

DeepL's browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) includes a WhatsApp Web integration: hover over a message and click the DeepL icon to translate it, or write in your language and translate it before sending. DeepL's translation quality is excellent, especially for European business language, and the extension has a free tier.

The limits: it's per-message rather than automatic, it translates text only (no voice notes, images or stickers), and it doesn't work in the WhatsApp phone app. Check that your languages are on DeepL's supported list — it's narrower than Google's.

Choose it if: you mostly work in European languages and translate now and then.

6. Kaption AI — best for voice-note transcription and productivity

Kaption AI is the biggest WhatsApp Web extension in this space: 50,000 users and a 4.8 rating from 5,100+ reviews in the Chrome Web Store. Its core is voice-note transcription and AI summaries, with live chat translation in both directions, plus extras well beyond translation — privacy blur, screen lock, reminders, scheduled messages, and a connection to AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. It also has desktop and phone apps.

Pricing: free to install with paid plans for heavier use; Kaption doesn't publish fixed prices on its homepage, so check inside the extension.

Choose it if: you get lots of long voice notes and want WhatsApp Web to act like a productivity tool, not just a translator.

7. Voqua — best for doing business across languages (chats, voice notes and calls)

Voqua is our extension, built for people who sell or source across a language barrier. On WhatsApp Web, every incoming message gets a translation right underneath it, voice notes are transcribed and translated with one click, and a side panel drafts your reply in their language. Voqua never sends anything for you — you always press send yourself.

Two things nothing else on this list does: voice replies in your own cloned voice (record in your language; they hear theirs, in your voice) and translated calls — share a link, your contact joins from any browser with no app, and you each speak your own language with live interpretation and captions.

The facts: 140+ languages including Urdu, Thai and Indonesian. Free plan with 30 translations and 5 voice notes a day; Pro $9.99/mo, Voice $14.99/mo, Power (with calls) $24.99/mo. The honest weakness: it's new — 159 users and 5 ratings in the Chrome Web Store, against Kaption's 50,000 — and it's WhatsApp Web only, with no phone app.

Choose it if: WhatsApp is how you close deals, and voice notes or calls are part of it.

Quick answers

What is the best WhatsApp translator app?

It depends on where you use WhatsApp. On a phone, try the built-in translator first; if your language isn't covered, WhatLingo or Global Chat Translator on iPhone. On WhatsApp Web there's no built-in option, so use an extension: DeepL for occasional text, Kaption AI for voice-note transcription, Voqua for chats, voice notes and calls together.

Is there a free WhatsApp translator?

Yes. WhatsApp's built-in Message Translations and Google Translate's Tap to Translate on Android are both free. Most dedicated apps and extensions offer a free tier or trial, then a subscription.

Can WhatsApp translate messages automatically?

On Android, the built-in translator can auto-translate a whole chat in its supported languages. On iPhone it's one message at a time. On WhatsApp Web there's nothing built in, so automatic translation needs an extension.

Which WhatsApp translator works on WhatsApp Web?

Only browser extensions — WhatsApp's own translator is mobile-only. DeepL, Kaption AI and Voqua all run on WhatsApp Web in Chrome; DeepL also works in Edge and Firefox.

Which WhatsApp translator translates voice notes?

Not WhatsApp's built-in one. WhatLingo and Global Chat Translator translate voice messages on iPhone. On WhatsApp Web, Voqua transcribes and translates voice notes inline, and Kaption AI focuses on transcription and summaries. For a one-off, see how to translate WhatsApp voice notes.
